TWICE is known for its bright and cute concepts. Though TWICE made a debut with a chic song, its cheerfulness can feel the room. Gaining recognition through their song “Cheer Up,” TWICE continues to release similar concepts but with new ideas. The fourth EP of TWICE, Signal, has the same name as the main song, “Signal.” Signal was released on May 15th, 2017, and has six tracks on it. The tracks in the EP have various genres such as hip hop, jazz, pop dance, and moombahton. Among the tracks that were released on Signal, there’s a track that also has a similar meaning to the main title track of this EP. The song title for that song is “Three Times a Day.”
Background of “Three Times a Day”
Around March 31st, 2017, several media outlets reported that TWICE was going to release their first full album, but the news was denied by JYP Entertainment. On April 27th, 2017, JYP Entertainment confirmed that TWICE was going to make a comeback and have finished filming their music video. The release of the Signal EP began with a teaser of the members wearing school uniforms. It was released on May 1st, 2017, along with the news that the comeback date for the girls was going to be held on May 15th, 2017. JYP Entertainment released several teasers including a highlight medley for the song “Three Times a Day.”
Story of “Three Times a Day”
In the “Signal” song, TWICE shows their tactics to gain attention from aliens by signaling their love for them. Showing that they are gaining interest in an alien may be symbolic of their crush, who is like an alien that is hard to understand. But, in “Three Times a Day,” the atmosphere changes from someone trying to gain the attention of their crush to someone growing frustrated at their lover because they feel like they don’t get the attention they want or their lover becomes indifferent towards them. That’s why they want three things from their lover: telling them good morning, telling them if the lover is headed somewhere, and saying goodnight to them. As simple as it is, it sounds like they want to hear some news from their lover that is difficult to get a hold of. “Three Times a Day” is an up-tempo track that has moombahton and reggaeton stylings. This song was written and composed by Kim Won and Dia, and the producer for the song is Kim Won.
Stage Performance of “Three Times a Day”
This song has become Sana’s favorite b-side, but when she suggested that TWICE perform it at the concert, it was rejected. So, unfortunately, until now, there’s no live or performance version of this song. But, it doesn’t make ONCE love this song any less. This song still leaves a remarkable feeling with the contrast of the cheery melody and the song’s lyrics.
