Banu married actor Dilip Kumar on October 11, 1966. Banu was 22 and Kumar 44 years old at the time of marriage. The couple have no children. I was taken aback because she was no longer the young girl I consciously avoided working with because I thought she would look too young to be my heroine. She had indeed grown to full womanhood and was in reality more beautiful than I thought she was. I simply stepped forward and shook her hand and for us time stood still.” Despite the age gap of 22 years, the two lovebirds were soon deeply in love. Saira Banu’s mother, Naseem Banu, played a pivotal role in the actor’s union. She played cupid for the two and brought them closer. Dilip Kumar finally proposed to Saira Banu, and there was no question for Saira to deny the proposal. The two got married in the year 1966. Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar got married in 1966. Their marriage was the talk of the town for many months, mainly because of their age difference. But the couple proved everyone wrong. He wrote, “Well, the one episode in my life that I would like to forget and which we, Saira and I, have indeed pushed into eternal oblivion is a grave mistake I made under pressure of getting involved with a lady named Asma Rehman whom I had met at a cricket match in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) where she then lived with her husband.” He added, “She was a mother of three when she was introduced to me as a fan and she seemed like umpteen other admirers, who were introduced to me by my sisters, Fauzia and Saeeda, at public places. She was a friend of my sisters.” Dilip married Asma, only to get divorced two years later. He came back to Saira Banu. Talking about Dilip Kumar leaving her for another woman, Saira Banu had said in an interview, “For me, it was always Saab, no one else. I was his fan from the time I can remember. While still a teenager, I wanted to be his wife. I’m very headstrong and once I made up my mind, there was no stopping me. I knew many beautiful women wanted to marry Saab, but he chose me.
